Prof. Oscar L. Evangelista, the adviser of the UPXDS Association,just released the book "Icons and Institutions, Essays on the History of the Philippines, 1952 - 2000". 

The book offers a very personal view of the University of the Philipppines over a fifty-year period. Professor Evangelista presents vignettes of UP history through icons of his time: Father John Patrick Delaney, SJ, chaplain of the UP Community, 1950-1956; Salvador P. Lopez, university president during the tumultous years, 1969-1975; and Armandao J. Malay, dean of students, 1970-1977.

In an essay on the U.P Student Council from the 1950s to the 1980s, Evangelista focuses on its rule as a liberal and later radicalized student body. His essay on the Experimental Democratization of Students program (1977-1981) follows the first grantees in 1977 to their graduation, and has a postcript on the grantees twenty-five years after they left UP. He reflects on his own fraternity, the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) International Service Fraternity, Eta chapter, from 1953 to 1998. The retrospective essay in celebration of the golden anniversary of class 1956 presents how UP Diliman looked in the Fifties, including the main events in the campus, student life, and important campus figures.

The book is published by the UP Press and was launched last November 21, 2008.
